the basics

What a DMARC record is

DMARC is a TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain that tells receivers what to do with email using your domain that fails SPF or DKIM: let it through, quarantine it or reject it.

A good start: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected]. With rua you receive reports on who sends on your behalf; after a few weeks with no surprises, move to p=quarantine. Gmail and Yahoo require it from bulk senders.

Sample DMARC record_dmarc.yourcompany.com · TXT
v=DMARC1The start of the record.
p=quarantineEmail that fails the checks goes to spam.
rua=mailto:[email protected]Where the daily reports arrive.
adkim=r; aspf=rRelaxed alignment: right for almost everyone.
common problems

The problems we find most often

No record

Without DMARC nobody stops others from using your domain, and the big providers require it.

Stuck at p=none

p=none only observes: fine at the start, not forever.

No rua

Without a reports address you don’t know who is sending on your behalf.

Two records

With more than one DMARC record, all of them are ignored.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I start: none, quarantine or reject?

With p=none and rua, to read the reports. Once SPF and DKIM pass for every service, move to quarantine and then, if you like, to reject.

My subdomain has no DMARC: is that a problem?

Not always: if the parent domain has a DMARC record, it also applies to subdomains (with the sp= policy, if set).

What are DMARC reports?

Files that providers send to the rua address, listing the servers that sent on your behalf and their SPF and DKIM results.

Is DMARC enough to stay out of spam?

No: it’s one of the requirements. Server reputation, content and list quality matter too.

Do your website or app emails still leave from the hosting server?

SMTP Senpai is the MailSenpai SMTP relay: it signs your emails with DKIM on your own domain, gives you the DNS records to publish and checks them for you. Servers and data in the EU.
