Four details, and your emails go out
They are the same for every program: you also find them, already filled in, in your customer area.
The sender must be on a domain verified in your area: otherwise the server refuses to send. For SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, use the free email DNS checker.
Three steps
Install the plugin
Download the zip below and upload it from System › Install › Extensions. The plugin is enabled at once and does nothing until you configure it.
Paste your API key
In System › Plugins search for SMTP Senpai, choose API key and paste the key from your customer area. Or choose SMTP with username and password.
Test and check your domain
On the status tab, send the test email and check SPF, DKIM, DMARC and MX of your sender domain.
The SMTP Senpai plugin for Joomla is free. Sending with the API key (over HTTPS, also where the host blocks SMTP ports) or the SMTP relay, test email, sender domain check, account status, email log and optional fallback to the Joomla mailer. It works for the whole site, including the Send Test Mail button. Version 1.0.0, for Joomla 4.4, 5 and 6. Open source, licensed under the GNU/GPL version 2 or later.
Frequently asked questions
Which Joomla versions are supported?
Joomla 4.4, Joomla 5 and Joomla 6, with PHP 7.2.5 or later. It was tested on Joomla 4.4, 5.4 and 6.1. Versions 4.0 to 4.3 are not supported.
Does the plugin change the Joomla configuration?
No: the Global Configuration is read and never changed. Disable the plugin and Joomla sends as before.
API key or SMTP?
The API key sends over HTTPS and also works where the host blocks SMTP ports. With SMTP, Joomla connects to the relay on port 2525 or 587, with STARTTLS.
Can I do without the plugin?
Yes: enter the details shown here in Global Configuration, Server tab, Mail section. In SMTP Security choose STARTTLS.
